This is my menu plan for this week.
As you can see it doesn't appear very 'wartime', as in I am not trying out any recipes from my books this week, but I am using my rations for all the foods that they are needed for, and not just helping myself willy-nilly from the food cupboard. There is nothing that I need to shop for to be able to make any of these meals and that is my main criteria at the moment.
The Smoothie that appears twice for breakfast is going to be made from two homemade smoothie mixes that I have in the freezer, simply chopped apple, spinach and chunks of banana all ready to go ... it's been four weeks since I've tasted banana. 🍌
This is Monday nights evening meal as shown on the menu plan, a simple Jacket Potato with a little sprinkle of cheese and salad from the garden.
And this is Tuesday's breakfast.
I have decided that I am not a fan of apple in porridge any more.
As I mentioned on yesterday's post I have already started to make a Christmas present wish list, every year without fail my sons, my Mum and Alan ask me what I would like and every year I say 'I don't know'. With this year being completely different I will be asking for things that I really need to keep me stocked up on specific items for the following year.
For example I have already completely run out of hand-cream, so a twelve months supply of that from someone would be lovely, and much more useful to me than the myriad of bottles of wine I received last year, not that I didn't enjoy them .... hic!!

What a brilliant idea. Good for you.
ReplyDeleteI love apple and cinnamon porridge - have you just had it too much? xx
I've not had porridge with apple for months, but I had two apples in the fridge ... the last two ... and one of them was a bit wrinkly so I decided to use it. Maybe a sprinkle of cinnamon with my porridge next time. I do really prefer my porridge plain though so perhaps I shouldn't mess about with it too much. :-)
DeleteSince taking up gardening I use much more hand cream. (I seem to get really filthy hands even if I wear gloves and so more time washing them has made them drier) I do like gifts which I are consumable - edibles or fancy bathroom products (ie shower gel, or handcream. I don't mean Loo Cleaner from Harrods!)
ReplyDeleteHaha ... I didn't for a minute think you meant posh loo cleaner. :-)
DeleteYes, last year I had a lot of edibles, but most people forget that I can't have dairy when they buy me food gifts and I end up having to give them to Alan ... not that he minds a couple of months supply of shortbread and chocolate biscuits.
Great minds, etc - I did a menu plan on Monday and for once I think I can stick to it, and have done one for next week as well. 😱
ReplyDeleteAs for the C word - I am afraid we get more Ba Humbug every turn of the wheel and have not bought presents for years. It really does make life so much simpler and no-one feels left out or unloved as a result.
Wow ... you are getting ahead of yourself, well done. Maybe I should start planning next weeks right now.
DeleteWhat I was thinking of doing is starting a list of meals that I enjoy using the wartime rations that I have and then hopefully I can just pick a menu plan each week from that list. Now THAT would be organisation at it's best. :-)
I really like the simplicity of eating this way and it doesn't mean that it can't be tasty. I find a meal plan doesn't work for me due to the unpredictability of my week but it would make life easier. Today is a day off as it is my twin boys birthday ( boys ???!!! they are 41 ! ) so cake has been made ,table covered in gifts and photos adorning the lounge of them as little ones and a take away for dinner ,I do love their birthdays. As for Christmas I'm afraid I might upset some people by saying I have already started buying gifts as I find it easier to spread it out , and me , I find it hard to think of something but I do love posh soaps and I'm a sucker for notebooks , shopping list pads etc so they are usually there along with the obligatory Christmas socks :) x
ReplyDeleteI hope your boys had a brilliant birthday, and yes I still call mine 'boys' as well even though they are 42 and 36. ;-)
DeleteBuying ahead of time is the best way to spread the cost of Christmas, some people start in the January sales I have never been that organised unfortunately. Although when the boys were small I did used to get their birthday presents in the sales as they were both born in February.
We splashed out on a large gift each for Christmas last year for my sons and their partners and I'm afraid that was us going out with a bang, the logistics of getting the presents to them was terrible. This year everyone will just get money sent to them to do with as they please.
Thanks for the menu plan! I really like the sound of all that especially sausage plait :) I like my porridge thick and apple in it doesn't really appeal, I usually have just a sprinkle of sugar on mine. Having said that....can I come for meals for the rest of the week please??? lol.... :0)
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea to make a Christmas wish list as I never know what to say when our daughter asks me.
The sausage plait in my head will look like the old Linda McCartney ones, gosh they were lovely, but in reality may look quite a lot messier. :-)
DeleteIf you came for meals you would have to bring your ration book with you, I only have enough rations for one. ;-)
That's a deal then! lol :)
DeleteGood day! I'm writing from Missouri, USA right in the middle. I just stumbled across your blog. I've been listening to a book on WWII homefront in England. While it's fiction, it is still eye opening. This blog fits right in! Thank you for caring enough to share this journey you're on with us. Please do pop by Harvest Lane Cottage and say hello!
ReplyDeleteLaura
Welcome to the blog, anyone can call by your blog now that you've left a comment here as clicking on your name will take us straight there. Welcome to the little ration club. xx
DeleteA good blog for you to read would be Carolyn's who's also in the UK. She's on my sidebar, or here: https://the1940sexperiment.com/
What a good idea about your Christmas list, far better than saying " I don't know " which I often do too!
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
Every year for years I drive everyone mad saying 'I don't know, surprise me', I think we all think that WE are easy to buy for when actually we're not. ;-)
DeleteI like your meal plans for the week (except for the porridge, perhaps; I'm not a porridge person). I really like the idea of smoothies and I am wondering why I don't make more of them, myself! My daughter makes them quite often.
ReplyDeleteI love porridge in the cooler months, not so much in Summer as I do tend to have more smoothies and occasionally cereal then, but I think eating seasonally means that you look forward to eating something again doesn't it. So porridge is going to be my Winter go to breakfast, with a couple of days of toast thrown in for good measure.
