Sugar, Bread, Toast

I missed the sugar ration off yesterdays photo ... oops, I knew something looked wrong!!

I don't use sugar on anything, maybe occasionally half a teaspoon in my porridge, but I don't have much of a sweet tooth so my sugar ration over the last few weeks of rationing was mostly used in the jelly and in the scones that I made.  I think I need to make some more scones this week, they are the perfect wartime treat aren't they ... minimal fat and just a bit of sugar.

I am also a dab hand at slicing my bread now, my slices are getting thinner and thinner, in fact so thin the other day that although it was perfectly straight it was also virtually see through.  So ... I ate it as it was a did another for my sandwich.  😄

I am also remembering to tip the loaf over near to the end to slice the bread the other way.  As this was getting a bit stale, the bread in this photo was purposefully sliced nice and thick ...

... ready for toasting the following morning.

Ready sliced bread is the greatest invention!!

  1. It's all about presentation - I love the saying "Bread and water can so easily become tea and toast"

    1. So do I, I had a postcard with that on it stuck on my fridge for years.

  2. Your bread looks more like proper home made bread than many bought loaves.
I'd try a loaf if only we had a Sainsburys nearer than 20 miles!

    1. It is the best looking and keeping loaf that I have found, unfortunately I think it has been giving me trouble with my dairy allergy. Reading the teeny, tiny small print it is made in a Sainsbury's bakery that handles other products and has a 'may contain' milk and milk by-products warning. I have felt yucky for a couple of weeks now and have been searching for the trigger. I had to stop eating Sainsbury's custard doughnuts for this reason so I should have put two and two together much sooner. I'm treating myself to an actual sliced loaf that is marked 'suitable for vegans' this week to see if it helps.

Which supermarkets do you have close to you? We have Sainsbury's (just a small one) Aldi and Booths ... I do miss Tesco. :-(

    1. Haha, yes perhaps I should have ended with that. This coming week I am back on sliced bread, see my reply to Sue above for the reason.

  4. Wow, you did slice that bread very thinly! Nice and evenly, too. :)

  5. Yep, ready sliced bread is awesome. While I slice straight (Harvey doesn't) my slices are pretty thick.

    God bless.

    1. I think the beauty of an uncut loaf is that you can choose the slice width based on what you are eating the bread with. :-)
