FAQs

I will use this page to answer any Frequently Asked Questions.

Any questions that appear in the comments that I think others may want to reference the answers too will also pop up here for posterity.

Just a couple of things that I get asked a lot to start us off:

Where about in the world are you?

I currently live in a small town in Lancashire which is in England in the UK.  I am originally from Manchester, which is also in Lancashire but I have lived in many places in England and Wales.

Why have you decided to live off WWII rations?

I have decided to do this mostly for both health and financial reasons ... and it fits in nicely with me enjoying a Challenge..

Eating the simple UK grown foods that were available in season and in carefully moderated amounts was proven to help our nation get fit, stay healthy and survive well in the war years.  After reading Chris van Tulleken's book Ultra Processed People I had already decided to try and remove as much ultra-processed food as I could from my diet and try to go back to basics.

Eating and living this way will also help cut my costs down and help me to be able to afford to retire a year early.  My husband Alan is one year older than me so he is due to retire in May 2025, if I have enough in the bank I will be able to join him even though my State Pension will not kick in for another year.

Why are your rations different from the general WWII ones?

For my rationing challenge this time I have decided to take the official Vegetarian Rations for 1942 as my starting point.  I am a dairy intolerant, non-meat eater, so I will be using vegan alternatives instead.  I am also limiting how many eggs I eat so although I could have had two per week I will be taking one egg per week, (plus the monthly ration) and two vegetarian sausages instead of the other one.

More FAQs will appear as I think of them or they trickle in.

If there is anything else you would like to know please ask away. 😀
