My Weekly Rations - Week Three

Week three of my ration challenge already, and actually I'm a day late with everything.  The last Bank Holiday of the year ... before the Christmas ones ... has thrown everything into disarray and just as I thought I knew what day it was it's suddenly not that day at all.  😄

To head the post a black and white photo of my weekly rations this week ... I love black and white photos ... but don't worry the colour version is at the bottom.

I didn't need any milk this week as I have around half of last weeks left.  That will do for me I don't use milk in many things.  If by any chance I suddenly start drinking lots of the stuff there's always the spare Monthly Rations carton still in the cupboard.

I put my coffee jar on the scales and zeroed them so that I could just add this weeks two ounces to the jar.

I didn't enjoy that cream cheese last week, and as it's a very ultra processed food I won't be buying that one again.  I will however still be using the Violife cheese that I enjoy.  The grated bit is leftover Cheddarton and the block is a new pack of Extra Mature that I opened to make it up to my four ounces.

The extra mature actually has the least ingredients, so I will have to think long and hard about if I want to carry on eating the Cheddarton version ... it is delicious though and the nearest dairy-free cheese to actual creamy cheddar.

The spread that I use as my butter and margarine allowance actually weighed exactly 6oz in it's tub, so I just left it there ... and I've given the butter dish the week off.

I topped the sugar cannister up with this week's 8oz.

I'm thinking that I now have enough to be able to make my Green Tomato Chutney and maybe a few jars of Compost Heap Jelly too.  🍅

This weeks oil ration in place of lard.

I will carry on doing this until all my stock is used up ... that may take a few years at just 2oz a week!!

This week's very random sweet ration. 😃

My sweetie stash is building up.  I still have one pack of the little chocolate covered mini rice cakes from week one and one of the little bars of chocolate from week two.

Here is everything all together in glorious colour, including my weekly egg and two veggie sausages.

I ate last weeks egg over the weekend it made for a lovely breakfast, I just fried it with the only little cherry tomato that was ready for picking and had it on a thick slice of toast.  I am finding that having such simple meals, with simple and few ingredients, means that every mouthful is savoured and really enjoyed.

  1. You're doing very well. My chocolate addiction would soon fall foul of the rules!! Have you lost weight eating so frugally?

    1. Alan gave me a couple of pieces of his chocolate last night, and rather weirdly for me just a couple were more than enough. I'm a changed woman!!

Yes, I've lost one pound each week up to now. :-)

  2. A vegan friend of mine recently mentioned that Cathedral City have introduced a vegan cheddar which he said was a game-changer. Obviously no idea how it would compare to your Cheddarton.

    1. Cathedral City plant based cheese is delicious, but it doesn't grate well. Instead of getting nice shreds it just crumbles into little pieces, so that's what made me try Cheddarton ... which I've found grates better and tastes pretty much the same.

  3. We are finding that our rations are lasting well, especially the fats and sugar so I am making a bread pudding much to Phil's delight, we always use our milk ration. I asked Phil if when we finish this way of eating if there is anything he would keep , he said the loose tea and would easily eat the same variety of meat free meals but is looking forward to a few more "eggy " things, he also doesn't mind the stork margarine. I would like a banana :)

    1. Yes, it's been the fats and sugar that are lasting well for me too. I had 4oz fat left over from last weeks ration so that is earmarked to make some scones and pastry today. I've heard that loose tea leaves are much more flavourful as they use the larger leaves for this, so it's no wonder that Phil is enjoying it more.

How long are you staying on rations for?

    2. We are doing it for a month but to be honest I wouldn't mind carrying on until Christmas as I am enjoying the challenge and the " clean eating ". I seem to be missing a few more things than Phil as I don't like stork margarine and I miss tomato ketchup, ( he still has his daddies sauce ) also bananas and oranges but he doesn't miss them , I also miss avocados but really shouldn't complain as neither of us are going hungry .

  4. I've changed to Cathedral City's lactose free cheddar as it seems to suit me better and it tastes the same as their normal one. It is a bit pricier though.
Do you find that your sweet tooth is diminishing now, Sue, as I'm surprised you have some of your ration left from last week? Sweet stuff can be my downfall so I'm trying to ignore the bags of sweets that G constantly leaves lying open in the kitchen :0/

    1. It's a shame that it's so much more expensive isn't it, it does taste good though.

My sweet tooth has naturally diminshed over this past couple of years, but now I'm finding that it's hardly there at all. If I have something sweet I tend to follow it with a cup of coffee and as I have my coffee black that sort of stops any sweetie binging from carrying on.

  5. It sounds like you are managing quite well on the rations, with certain items left over, as well! :)

    1. I'm doing really well and it's good that I've not had to touch my 'spare milk' at all and didn't even need any this week. Doing this challenge is highlighting for me what I do actually eat regularly and what I used to buy out of habit and then just not use.

  6. All very impressive so far. Do you feel as if you are 'going without' very much? xx

    1. Not really, I guess mostly because it's all quite new again and it feels good to be doing it. :-)
