My Wartime Rationing Evening Meals

My wartime rationing evening meals have not all been strictly 'wartime'.  While I am trying to eat my way through things that I already have in there's been a lot of  'in the spirit of' going on.

Sometimes I'm pretty close and the 'bangers and mash with gravy' fits that bill in my opinion, although some steamed cabbage on the side would have made it perfect.

The bread crumbed plaice and mash not quite right, and of course there were no veggies.  I just wasn't hungry enough and with me if I'm not that hungry it's always the vegetables that get left off.

I really need to do something about that!!

The Garlic Kyiv definitely not 1940s fare, but the rice and peas would have been.

Beans on toast one night when I wasn't hungry ... there's a real theme developing here isn't there!

My favourite has to be the nights when I have pasty or a pie with gravy.  That way I can incorporate the vegetables into it's pastry wrapping and I don't feel as guilty that they're not on my plate.

My favourite meal up to now and one that I think will be on the menu at least a couple of nights every month is the Woolton Pie.  Tasty, well balanced and so easy to make.

  1. I can't work it out from the photo. Is that gravy in an authentic 1940s Woods Ware Primrose jug? If so I'm incredibly impressed

    1. Yes, it is. I have a few Woods Ware Primrose pieces and some Beryl pieces too, including my lovely coffee pot that is more for decoration as there's only me drinking coffee. :-)

I used to have a lot of Iris too, the blue colourway but I sold that years ago.

  2. I do like a good helping of veg and would have added a cupful of peas to each meal, including the bangers and mash (although cabbage would be nicer) I'll happily eat just a plate of veg and gravy :) All your meals look tasty and filling though Sue.

    1. I definitely need to work on my veg uptake don't I. I must think 'green' more often when I'm making a meal and like you say, at least add some peas to the plate. :-)

  3. Vegetables are the favourite part of any meal for me so I have to make sure I add some protein. The pie looks delicious and a filling main course I’m sure. Catriona

    1. I don't really worry too much, I'm sure it all balances out over the course of the week. It is easy to pile the plate up with the things that you like best though and forget other things isn't it. I honestly think I could live on pies. :-)

  4. I am the same as PP, I would have wanted to add cabbage and carrots to the sausage & mash 😄

A winter favourite meal was a portion of Morrison's Free From stuffing mix, with cabbage, carrots, peas, sweet potato and whatever else I felt like chucking into a steamer basket, with red Bisto. It will come back into rotation when I have found an alternative - they have stopped selling the Free From stuff since last year. 🤬😡

    1. I would have been overfull if I added anything else to the plate. I really don't eat large meals now.

Thanks for reminding me I have some stuffing mix in a jar in the cupboard, I love sage and onion stuffing so that will be appearing on the menu soon.

  5. To be honest, I think 'in th4e spirit' is perfectly OK. After all, it was a long time ago and things change. OK, not always to the good, but even so . . .
I think you're doing great! xx

    1. I'm doing my best in currently trying times, so I am happy to mix and match a bit at the moment. The main thing is I'm not buying anything that is outside the 1942 remit when I shop.

  6. Oh, those meals look just perfect to me, although I am more likely to add chili sauce than gravy! I'd be quite happy to skip the vegetables! But, aren't you mostly vegetarian? Don't you use vegetarian sausages (which I assume are made of vegetables)? Isn't the Garlic Kyiv vegetarian, too? If so, then, you have vegetables included in your meals, don't you? You just don't have additional vegetables on the side!

I've been watching episodes of The War Time Farm online and I'm finding it quite interesting.

    1. I don't like labels, but if I was to have one I guess it would be 'dairy-free pescatarian'. The sausages and Kyiv are both soy protein based, which I suppose is a vegetable but so processed I don't consider it as one ... but nice try. ;-)

I have The Wartime Farm on DVD, it's a great series isn't it, especially Ruth's cooking. I love the farmhouse kitchen they have.

    2. Sorry, didn't mean to be rude with labels. Yes, soy protein probably shouldn't be classified as a vegetable.

    3. You weren't rude at all, don't worry. 🙂
