Week Four's Shopping Went Mouldy!!

 

This week's shopping cost me £3.59 from Booths.

Just a loaf of unsliced bread and four nice large potatoes, I still have some spuds left from last week so I should have plenty for now.

I only bought the bread from Booths as Alan wanted to grab a coffee and cake after we picked his car up from the garage.   I actually prefer the more National Loaf style bread that I can get from Sainsbury's at less than half the price.   The car was only at the garage for an MOT and it passed, sailed through with flying colours once again ... perhaps we were celebrating!

Anyway that was late on Tuesday, yesterday morning ... Friday ... I went to cut myself a couple of slices to toast, and although the loaf was nice and soft when I turned it over to slice it, I noticed it was riddled with mould.  Not the little dots of green that you could pick off and turn a blind eye to, but more the cobwebby sort of mould you see lurking in the corners of a derelict house.   

Imagine that happening during the war years, you would be heartbroken.

I think mine was having a war all of it's own!!

It went straight into the bin and I went next door and stole two slices of bread from Alan's kitchen ... it's much too hot for porridge at the moment.

  1. Oh, no! As you rightly say, in certain contexts, that would have been an utter disaster. Still might be in some homes where things are very tight although I guess that's not the bread one would buy in that situation.
    I always shove my bread in the freezer!

    2. Yes, I did realise that it's been super hot this week, although Alan's loaf bought at the same time, but sliced seeded, was still fine. Not the sort of bread that I can afford to waste either from my £10 a week budget, so I won't be buying that one again, I'll definitely be going back to the £1 Sainsbury's loaf.

  2. I can imagine the air was blue as well as the bread ! I know it's not authentic but I do freeze my bread still , especially bits that I save up to make bread pudding ( guaranteed to put on a pound per bite but so yum )x

    1. For once I didn't swear ... I was too busy saying YUK!!

      I usually do freeze all my bread, I need to make some room in the freezer so that I can go back to doing that I think. One loaf sliced and then frozen will safely last me all week.

  4. How annoying. The heat has a lot to answer for :0/ Imagine that happening to a family who have nothing else though. I tend to freeze slices from our bread (G has white and I like seeded) so that they don't go off in the hot weather we're having. Roll on next week when it should cool off again.

    1. I know! For a family with only access to that particular loaf it would have been awful, there was no safe way of eating it though. I'm looking forward to it cooling down for sure. :-)

  5. Terrible! How is that even possible?! Ok, you have very hot spell at the moment, but still - it was only three days! I would be angry no matter how much or little that bread cost even now, and during rationing - furious. (but yes, I do freeze most of our bread, if I buy a loaf or a round one, I'll slice it and then put into freezer, as well as buns, too).

    1. I was more mystified than angry to be honest, that hasn't happened for years. Yes, I've had little pinpricks of green that can be picked off and and bread toasted but never this. It shows me I need to run down the contents of the freezer and make space for my bread and anything else that I have leftovers of. A lesson learnt.

  6. I like the poster, it is new to me. The National Loaf was so unpopular it was nicknamed Hitler’s Secret Weapon. It was greyish and gritty with added calcium, and could not be sold until the day after it was made so it could be cut into thinner slices, and it was soon stale. Hence all the recipes for using stale bread.
    It is so annoying your bread went mouldy. Is it worth writing a nice letter with a photograph to the manufacturer? Once one would have said Bakery. They might send you a voucher.

    1. Yes, I've done a lot of reading about the National Loaf, fascinating stuff. Too late to take a photo, I wanted the mould out of the kitchen so it went straight into the wheelie bin ... it's the first time I've thrown food away for years!!
