Christmas on the Home Front

 

Driving home from Mum's yesterday afternoon we got to chatting about my life on rations and I mentioned to Alan that I had recently watched Carolyn's YouTube video making her Mock Turkey, or 'Murky' as it was often called.  I asked him if he fancied it for Christmas dinner this year?

And to my surprise he agreed.  😀

So now I need to watch the video again and perhaps have a practice run for myself.



Obviously it can be made with real sausage-meat if that's what you like, but I will be making it with Carolyn's idea of plant-based sausages, and Alan is more than happy with this.

The recipe is taken from this book, page 230, although it is in many others too.

So, I think it's time for me to get the book in my top photo out ready for some Christmas inspiration ... and to stop writing the word Christmas when it's still September!!

  1. Please carry on with Christmas, even in September, not in the decorations up sort of way but in the little put away/ planning sort of way. I think this would have been the same on the homefront, squirrelling away coloured paper for homemade decorations etc. I will be having my usual sweet chilli bean loaf this year as my husband wants his meat. Lovely that Allan will join you sharing murky.

    1. You have just given me an idea for some sheets of coloured paper that I have that have been waiting to be used for something for ages ... a paper garland for the living room for Christmas. But it won't be going up until the 4th December of course. :-)

  3. Tam is quite right, in a time of scarcity of materials/supplies women* would have begun holiday preparations well ahead of time storing away whatever they could, when they could.

    Murkey with veggie sausages sounds great, there would be a mutiny here I I tried it. 😢

    * yes, it was nearly always the women . . . 😡

    1. Yes, for sure, if you read Frugal in Norfolk's War Diaries she does just this every year. Saving sausages each week ready for making lots of sausage rolls for Christmas etc. I'm lucky that Alan is always very open to trying veggie and vegan foods even though when he cooks for himself he does like lots of meat.

  4. I remember watching that episode of the Wartime Farm when they made the mock turkey! September is not too early to start preparing for Christmas! My grandmother would make her own candied peel, etc., for the Christmas cake and she'd do them well in advance.

    1. I think it just seems early to me as I am usually a 'last minute' sort of Christmas preparer.

  5. I enjoyed watching Carolyn preparing it and thought it would be good as our Sunday lunch but scaled down to a one pound loaf tin, I am going to use Richmond vegan sausages and a bbq sauce glaze and doesn't she look amazing !

    1. It would be simple to make it in a 1lb loaf tin wouldn't it, but now Alan has seen the 'parsnip legs' I don't think I would get away with that here. :-)

  6. I just watched the mock turkey video - it looks fantastic and am sure it tastes it too, just my sort of thing. Husband would probably eat and enjoy it, although he'd no doubt want it as stuffing alongside the meat. I think I'd glaze mine with cranberry sauce rather than brown sauce.

    1. I did tell Alan that he could cook some turkey or other meat to go with his, but he said no it would be great just as it is. I might surprise him with some 'real' pigs in blankets though, he does love those.

  7. I watched Carolyn's video too and the murky looks delicious. I might have to try it just for the two of us sometime as we've been invited to our daughter's for Christmas day and only the real thing will do for all of them. I do love a bit of sage and onion :)

    1. That sounds like the best of both worlds, a traditional Christmas lunch at your daughters and then an alternative at yours. :-)

    1. I need to save up half a pound of my sausages and then I'll be giving it a trial run ... or of course I could do it in a quarter sized recipe and have a pigeon sized offering. :-)

  9. I have only just got round to watching the video. I like that vegans or vegetarians can do it Carolyn's way and meat eaters can use sausages and streaky bacon. I will be interested to see how yours turns out.

    1. Yes, it a very easy and very adaptable recipe isn't it, no matter how you eat I bet there's a way to make it work for everyone. Alan wants the 'parsnip legs' ... he's intrigued by the whole thing.

  10. I bought Christmas on the Home Front after you recommended it last year. I like the idea of the Murkey and might have a go at a smaller size for myself. Catriona
