I was sat on the benches outside the pub for a rest while Alan ran some errands the other day and decided to photograph our lovely old cobbles.
This is the look towards the benches and the pub with the Market Cross in the foreground.
And this is a look down the High Street of our town from there.
A modern bustling little town with parking down one side ... except on market day and bollards dotted the full length on both sides so that cars don't go onto the pavements.
I'm not sure what year this is, but it's the same view in a time of much less traffic.
And this is how it looked in the 1940s looking up towards the pub and the market cross.
A step back in time.

ReplyDeleteIt's very of it's time isn't it. That shop was an old fashioned sweet shop when we first moved here, then they moved to the little indoor market area ... where the lady with the swishy white coat is walking in he photo. It's about to re-open as something else soon. I love that our High Street is full of little independent shops. Our only Costa is a machine in the One Stop/Post Office.

ReplyDeleteThere must be loads available on Google of your own town. These were taken from postcards bought at antique fairs.
DeleteNot a lot seems to have changed, in terms of the buildings and skyline, has it? It looks like a really nice place to live.

ReplyDeleteThe answer sadly is 'not that good'. It's run entirely by volunteers so it's more often closed than open. I don't know how they make enough to pay the rent and rates, unless they have managed to strike a good deal ... and that is not always the case for charity shops these days.
